Considering a career in care? Tom has given us an insight into starting with Home Instead and how this can fit well with his lifestyle.
I began working for Home Instead after completing my A-levels as a gap year student before heading off travelling. The initial training was thorough and fully prepared me with the skills and awareness I needed to start shadowing experienced care professionals with various clients. Meeting the office staff during this training and getting a brief idea of the systems behind the day-to-day operations was also very beneficial. It enabled me to tailor my notes and feedback from visits to better assist the office staff, while ensuring they were of the highest quality for the clients.
Working at Home Instead has been a great fit for me in terms of flexibility. During the summer, I have worked part-time as a tennis coach, in addition to helping run a kids’ holiday sports camp. The option to work evenings and weekends at Home Instead suited me well, allowing me to make the most of my time and have a meaningful impact on clients. Additionally, when the summer camps ended and I had more availability – it was easy to communicate with the office and pick up additional visits.
In the last couple weeks of summer, before I head off on my travels, I found myself with a couple weeks of increased availability. During this interim period, I had the opportunity to assist in the office during a busy time when staff were away on holiday. I found this experience incredibly eye-opening, giving me insight into the day-to-day operations and allowing me to get to know more of the staff and clients.
As summer comes to an end, it brings a mix of emotions, marking a milestone before embarking on my travels. This, along with the approach of university in the coming years, where I’ll be moving around the country, opens up new opportunities. Home Instead has many offices nationwide, including one in Loughborough. When I start university in September 2025, this will be very helpful as I hope to work at the Loughborough office and then return to Tavistock during the holidays to work here as well.
