Welcome to the latest issue of Older Wiser Together (OWT)

The aim of OWT is to become a trusted and valued part of our community, particularly for those aged 50
Our mission is so important to us. This refreshed mission was developed by consulting with all our staff. The enriching of lives and bringing joy is different for all of us and as you may have read in our client case studies. Building trust with a client over a period of time and enabling a client to regain independence or join in a simple activity again is hugely rewarding to our staff and of course to the client and their family.
We gather together our staff for regular training and updates but also so that they can support each other. Our theme this month was well-being and best practice and the room was buzzing with ideas and suggestions to continually improve the care of the clients. Those who had employment anniversaries went away with cream teas to enjoy with their families. Have a look at more of the photos here.
Megan has nearly completed her apprenticeship with us and is set to continue to develop her care skills with Home Instead. Megan joined us before she turned 18 as she was keen to gain supported hands-on experience. Megan’s confidence has grown hugely during this time and she is much loved by all her clients who she supports to live independently. Read more of her story here.
In West Devon and East Cornwall our population is ageing at a faster rate than other parts of the country and people move out of cities into rural and coastal locations. As the population ages, hospitals face increasing pressure from the rising admission rates with insufficient beds to support them. Preventing hospitalisation through effective home care has become a critical focus at Home Instead. Home care is is at the heart of reducing the number of patients being admitted to hospital, easing the burden on the NHS. Read more about preventing hospitalisation –
We all need to monitor how much we drink and this can become a real issue for older people who are struggling to regulate their temperature in hot weather. This water bottle can help us to think about drinking more during the day. A relatively new product called Jelly Drops can encourage someone to increase their fluid intake as the “sweets” are attractive and provide fluid, and hydration salts. Alternatively, leaving watery fruit within easy reach can help. Ice lollies can be a lovely treat on a hot day and of course top up fluids.
Live-in care involves a specially chosen Care Professional moving into their client’s home. They provide companionship and practical support throughout the day, enabling that person to continue living the life they have always known and doing the things they enjoy the most. Families have peace of mind knowing there is someone supporting their loved one on an ongoing basis, not only providing daily support but company too. We know that finding care isn’t easy. With so many options and choices, it can be hard to know where to turn. But our care begins with you. By spending more time listening and understanding your circumstances than anyone else, we’re confident we can help you get through it. So give us a call and we’ll help you find the answer, with no pressure to make a decision right away. Read morehere.
