We were so sad to say goodbye and thank you to the lovely Jill last month. Jill has been with Home Instead for five and a half years. Jill joined us in the early days of the company after a career locally as a primary school teacher. Over the years Jill has brought much joy to her clients and also to their extended family. Jill spent several weeks with a client, who loved to paint, working on a set of Russian dolls as a present for his wife. . A Christmas card they made together still comes out every year as a beautiful reminder of the love the client had for his family. Jill’s Easter bonnets have become a yearly ritual. Jill is onto the next chapter and is looking forward to the chance to travel around Europe. Thank you, Jill for your contribution over the years, keep in touch and our very best wishes.
Several years ago St Guys and St Thomas Foundation Trust made a powerful video called Barbara’s Story. This video is based around an older lady at home fretting about an appointment and all the actions she needs to complete to reach her destination. The video is a great reminder to us all about how our interactions with many in our community may need us to stop and give some extra time. Have a look here: https://youtu.be/_HBwb1kcbNg
Whilst there is no way to completley eliminate the risk of dementia, regular exercise, keeping mentally activity and eating a balanced diet can all contribute to better cognitive function. Regular exercise boosts blood flow to the brain. A balanced diet includes fruit and vegetables, and omega 3 fatty acids. Engaging in puzzles, new skills and social activities helps to maintain cognitive function. If you or a loved one are finding it more difficult to address the above, we can help by helping with exercise like our Love to Move group or helping to cook nutritious home cooked food.

Our Director Lynn is the Chair of Tavistock Dementia Alliance and the Tavyside Surgery invited Lynn along to train their staff how to best support people living with dementia and their carers. Additionally the TDA is working with the practice to ensure every aspect is as dementia friendly as possible. A dedicated noticeboard is being erected in the Surgery to help signpost people to groups and services.
