Stithians Lake

For a county famous for its beaches, it is easy to forget that Cornwall has a number of rather beautiful freshwater lakes and reserviors. Stithians Lake is actually a reservoir that was dammed in 1965 and when full, contains nearly 5000 decalitres or 500,000,000 litres of water, making it the largest inland waterway in Cornwall.  It is a lovely place to go for a gentle walk, camp or even fly-fish for brown and rainbow trout. As the windiest inland waterway in the South West, it is also very well known as a centre for watersports – including sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and windsurfing. The Wild Vibes Café is situated right on the shore of the lake and offers excellent local food and drinks.

Cornwall Gold

Cornwall Gold has been a favourite attraction for both locals and tourists for a very long time. Who can forget the £1 million pounds in cash on show in a plastic box, or the replica of the James Bond Aston Martin DB5? This free-to-enter attraction sits in 18 acres of grounds and includes a large jewelry shop, a crazy golf course, craft and art activities including pottery painting and the Bearworks where you can build your own bear. Sitting within the grounds is Tolgus Mill, a grade 2 listed tin mine that dates back to 1865.  This is a fascinating glimpse into the industrial past of Cornwall, driven by Cornish tin mining in and around Redruth. Having been lovingly restored, the mine is now producing tin again, which is being combined with silver and gold to make the jewelry sold in the shop. You can even pan for real gold! Finally, there’s the large and very good The Cornish Pantry café, where you can enjoy lots of tasty food, including of course, a traditional Cornish pasty or cream tea.

National Trust - East Pool Mine

East Pool Mine is another fantastic place to learn more about Cornwall’s industrial heritage. Part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage site, this National Trust-owned former tin mine was one of the very last to shut, having opened as a copper mine in the 1700’s. In 1834 it started producing tin until it finally closed in 1945. The land on which the mine is built was owned by the very wealthy Basset family, who used the profits from the mine to build a substantial family home in nearby Tehidy – a very desirable place to live even now.  The highlights of the site include not one but two Cornish Engine Houses. Taylor’s Engine House was built in the 1920’s and houses a 19th century Cornish beam engine manufactured in Hayle, one of a few left in the world. The other is the 19th century-built Michell’s Engine House containing the last “whim” engine left in the world, designed by the Cornishman EW Michell in 1887.
