Changing Views on Ageing: Live Well with Home Instead Tyne Valley

Discover how our research shows people wish to stay active for longer and how Home Instead supports active ageing in our local community in the Tyne Valley.

Our recent UK Home Instead research brought to light our changing attitudes to ageing, and a key observation was that the desire for activity does not diminish with age.

Our survey found that 85% of people want to stay physically active as they get older. Shooting up to an impressive 89% among those aged over 75. This highlights a growing desire among older adults to remain vibrant and engaged for as long as possible. We can certainly attest that so many of our Home Instead in and around Tyne Valley keep their appetite for life well into old age and we have certainly witnessed that age doesn’t have to be a barrier!

Here are three tips for staying active as we age:

1. Join local groups

Participate in community activities like walking clubs, fitness classes, or hobby groups to stay socially engaged and physically active.

2. Set realistic goals

Establish achievable fitness goals such as daily walks (short or long), aqua aerobics, movement or chair yoga classes, to maintain motivation and to be able to track progress. Always consult your GP before making any changes to your routine.

3. Stay consistent

Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine, ensuring regular exercise becomes a habit, even if it’s just a few minutes each day.

  1. Walking is a good lower-impact way of staying active and local groups keep us connected with others. Ramblers Wellbeing Walks Northumberland and Prudhoe Health walks are two groups to enjoy walks amid the beautiful landscapes and villages of Tyne Valley.

  1. When it comes to leisure and fitness, swimming pools and gyms bustle with energy. Whether it’s Newburn Activity Centre or swimming, aqua classes or gym at Prudhoe Waterworld, you’ll find something exciting to try.

  1. For those with green fingers, gardening and allotment groups like Prudhoe Community Allotment or Hexham Allotment Association offer a fulfilling way to connect with nature.
