As we age, the risk of falls increases significantly, becoming more of a concern for our clients and their families. At Home Instead Wandsworth, we’re taking proactive steps to help you and your family avoid accidents and injuries.

In collaboration with Lambeth Carers Hub, we are excited to announce an upcoming Fall Prevention Awareness Session designed specifically for family carers. This session will be delivered by falls expert from the NHS Falls Clinic, ensuring that attendees receive professional and invaluable advice.

Why Focus on Fall Prevention?

Falls are the largest cause of emergency hospital admissions for older people and can drastically affect their quality of life.

Around 30% of people aged 65 and above living at home—and 50% of those aged 80 and above living at home or in residential care—experience at least one fall a year.

When falls result in injury, the consequences can be serious and life-altering and often precipitate going into residential care.

5 Essential Fall Prevention Tips

While we prepare for our detailed session, here are some vital fall prevention tips that can help you or your loved one stay safe:

1. Create a Safe Living Environment:

    – Remove tripping hazards such as loose rugs, trailing wires, and clutter from walkways and high-traffic areas.

    – Ensure adequate lighting throughout the home, especially at night. Consider night lights in hallways and bathrooms.

2. Encourage Regular Exercise:

    –  Activities like yoga or simple stretching exercises can improve strength and balance, significantly reducing the risk of falls.

    – Keep the mind active and alert with puzzles and games to improve cognitive function

3. Review Medications:

    – Some medications can cause dizziness or dehydration, leading to falls. Have a healthcare provider review all medications regularly and stay hydrated.

4.  Install Safety Devices:

     – Equip bathrooms with grab bars and non-slip mats. Consider a shower seat and hand-held shower if standing for long periods is challenging.

5. Regular Vision and Hearing Checks:

    – Poor vision and hearing impairments increase the risk of falls. Regular check-ups can ensure that glasses and hearing aids are adequately adjusted.

About the Event

The event will not only focus on these crucial tips but also provide actionable advice on how family, friends, and carers can implement practical strategies to prevent falls effectively.

We encourage everyone in Wandsworth and the surrounding areas to join us for this informative session.
