Read about the activities at Home Instead Wandsworth's dementia-friendly community cafes this June. Join us to create connections and enjoy meaningful experiences.
At Home Instead Wandsworth, we pride ourselves on creating unforgettable experiences and nurturing a warm, inclusive community for our local older adults.
Our community cafes—Butterfly Cafe, Tulip Cafe, and Sunflower Cafe—are central to this mission. Designed to be dementia-friendly, these spaces offer a welcoming environment where older adults can enjoy engaging activities and make lasting connections.
Twice a month, the Butterfly Cafe at King’s College Hospital in Denmark Hill springs to life. This June was no exception.
Jane, one of our dedicated Kings Butterfly Volunteers, spruced up the cafe with fresh table decorations, bringing in new plants and butterfly motifs that created a breath of fresh air and added to a calm, serene and dementia-friendly setting.
We were also excited to have a visit from Dylan of Froglife, a dementia-friendly conservation group, that aims to bring the outdoors inside, through a range of nature and sensory activities. Dylan captivated everyone with fascinating stories about different butterfly species and led a nature-themed sensory activity. Attendees had a wonderful time, learning about butterflies and creating artwork with paint. Dave, one of our volunteers, shared his beautiful butterfly design.
Every Thursday from 11 am to 1 pm, All Saints Church in West Dulwich transforms into our Tulip Cafe. This June, we’ve enjoyed knitting sessions and fantastic music sessions thanks to Alistair, all paired with tea and cakes that brought companionship and smiles to all who participated. The Tulip Cafe is a lovely way to spend a Thursday morning, with good company and tasty treats.
The doors of the Sunflower Cafe at Balham Baptist Church open every Wednesday from 2 pm to 4 pm, and June brought friendly gatherings and creative activities.
Jean, who also volunteers at King’s College Hospital, led a poetry session where participants shared what summer means to them. Using our words, Jean composed a beautiful poem, making it a touching and enjoyable afternoon as we heard and created poetry and listened to songs of summer.
Art therapy was another memorable event. Led by Angela, one of our dedicated Care Professionals and cafe assistants, the session encouraged attendees to create collages with various materials. Each participant then described their creations using words or themes, some even writing full paragraphs. Words like “love” and “peace” showed the thoughtfulness and creativity of everyone attending. To top it all off, the artwork was laminated, allowing everyone to take home a piece of their day.
We extend a warm invitation to you to visit one of our community cafes, we welcome those living with dementia and their carers in our local area.
