Navigating life with dementia can be a challenging journey, not only for those living with the condition but also for their loved ones and caregivers. At Home Instead Wandsworth, we understand the complexities and emotional impact. That’s why we’ve created warm, friendly environments where older adults and their carers can find support, engage in enjoyable activities, and meet others who understand their experiences.
Let’s take a closer look at our local dementia-friendly support groups in South London, organised by our wonderful Kemi, that make a difference in our community.
A dementia cafe is a welcoming space where individuals with dementia and their carers can come together to socialise, share experiences, and find support. These cafes are pragmatic places designed to provide practical help and meaningful engagement. They offer a range of activities tailored to the needs and preferences of the attendees, creating a supportive community atmosphere.
Every Thursday, from 11 am until 1 pm, you’re invited to the Tulip Café at All Saints Church in West Dulwich. This gathering is a place to enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of cake. It’s also a wonderful space for over 65s and their carers, offering socialisation and varied activities such as music therapy, seated exercises, art therapy, and poetry. Here, Care Professionals and visitors alike share moments of joy and create new memories. Do come along, you are free to drop in!
Why is socialisation so important for those living with dementia? The sense of connection and belonging can have a remarkable impact on well-being. Engaging in activities with others can help maintain cognitive functions, enhance mood, and reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. We are passionate about helping individuals make the most of every moment, and this ethos is at the heart of what we do.
Over in Balham Baptist Church, the Sunflower Community Cafe opens its doors every Wednesday between 2 pm and 4 pm. It’s a time for togetherness and a breather from the everyday routine. Our Home Instead team ensures that everyone feels included and supported. To reserve a space, contact us at Home Instead Wandsworth – we would love to welcome you.
For a touch of creativity and hope, the Butterfly Cafe at King’s College Hospital, Denmark Hill, offers a sanctuary twice a month. Run in conjunction with the South London and Maudsley (SLAM) team, it’s a place where stories are shared, and insights are gained. The atmosphere is facilitated by our team and a nurse from the Hospital team too, it’s a place for joy and creative expression, making it an invaluable resource for those affected by dementia. To join us at this unique cafe, please register in advance, email: [email protected].
In all our cafes – Tulip, Sunflower, and Butterfly – we strive to create safe, positive spaces for older adults to interact and engage in a range of activities. Our aim at Home Instead Wandsworth, Lambeth and Dulwich is to help minimise social isolation and increase holistic well-being. From reminiscing sessions to art and music therapy, we bring together the therapeutic and the enjoyable. This is all part of the work done by our fantastic team member Kemi, who coordinates these cafes with dedication and care.
