Happy New Year!

Yesterday was our first café of the year. The attendees arrived in great spirits after the Christmas break with big smiles all around after the success of our Christmas Café, having not ventured out much due to the recent weather, they were all looking forward to engaging in social activities again, with a couple of new faces that attended too.

The theme for yesterday’s café was Scotland and Chinese New Year as both are celebrated in January.

We start the session, with our quiz master Bob, delivering a great quiz on Scotland and burns night, this was then followed by refreshments, which was a selection of shortbreads and oat bars – in keeping with the Scottish theme and there was time for the group to chit chat and catch up with stories from their Christmas.

Suzanne – a member of the office team from Home Instead, read the poem ‘Ode to a haggis’ by Robert Burns, in great Scottish style.

Play your cards right was next on the agenda and Joan, our volunteer, did a great job and it was very much enjoyed by the group. They are always looking to try their hands at different activities we put on – increasing their confidence and stimulating their minds.

Our sign language of this week’s session was ‘Happy New Year’. Bob then read out another poem ‘My hearts in the highlands’

As with Chinese New Year – a tradition is to put a gold coin in a red envelope and pass to each other – this signifies wealth and prosperity.

We ended signing Auld Lang Syne.

Huge thank you too all attendees and volunteers for yet another great companionship café, it is hugely rewarding to tackle isolation and loneliness in our local community

The reminder for the next Companionship Café at the Hub is 13th February 12.30-2.30pm
