Proud to Be Supporting Pride in Weston

We celebrated International LGBTQ+ Pride Day on Friday 28th June

Happy International LGBT Pride Day!

The origin of International LGBT Pride Day (also known as International Pride Day or simply Pride Day) can be traced back to the riots that took place in reaction to a police raid on the Stonewall Inn pub in New York’s Greenwich Village on 28 June 1969.

At that time, US legislation was extremely restrictive against the LGBT community. Same-sex relations could be punishable by fines, imprisonment or even controversial conversion therapy.

Raids on bars or establishments where the LGBT community used to congregate were commonplace, but the excessive harshness of the raid and events following this on the 28th June turned that date into a symbol.

Over the following days, the Greenwich Village neighbourhood (where the Stonewall Inn was located), hosted various protests and demonstrations. This time became a historic turning point in the demands of a group persecuted for their sexual orientation or gender identity and lead to much support for the LGBT community going forward. Annually we now celebrate the month of June s Pride Month, where individual cities, towns and villages hold events to support the LGBT community. June 28th is marked at International LGBT Pride Day in recognition of the Stonewall Riot that kickstarted the movement for acceptance and inclusion for LGBT individuals.

On the afternoon of 28th June we hosted a Pride Party at our Office for our team to enjoy. We had a lovely time and enjoyed a quiz and informative talk about the North Somerset LGBT+ Forum and Pride in North Somerset from Forum Chair, Steve Winter-Gray. The team really felt informed and learned a lot. We also had rainbow mocktails, snacks, fun taking photos, and a Pride themed word search to keep us busy too. A colourful and enjoyable afternoon!

Thank you to our Care Professionals and Office Team for showing support and unity on this historic and important day, and a huge thank you to Steve for coming along, we really enjoyed having you join us.
