Nobody deserves to feel alone at Christmas. Here's how Home Instead Wimbledon and Kingston are combating loneliness in older adults around our community
Loneliness is a growing challenge for many older adults, with its impact on health often compared to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. It’s a significant risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and even depression. However, it’s not age itself but the circumstances associated with ageing—such as the loss of significant relationships or limited opportunities to engage with others—that make loneliness so prevalent, as reported by British Journal of Community Nursing.
At Home Instead Wimbledon & Kingston, we understand the profound impact loneliness can have, and we’re here to help. Our companionship care service offers much more than practical support—it’s about engaging with our clients in a meaningful way, to overcome loneliness, increase independence and boost wellbeing.
Our Care Professionals are all local, compassionate, and equipped with a full driver’s license, enabling them to help clients maintain independence. Whether it’s accompanying someone to a GP appointment, picking up a prescription, or enjoying a favourite café, our team ensures older adults can continue to participate in activities that matter to them.
Community engagement is at the heart of what we do. We support clients in accessing local groups, events, and activities, helping them feel part of the vibrant Wimbledon & Kingston community. Home Instead run weekly ‘Love to Move’ sessions every Monday at Raynes Park Library from 12-1pm, or ‘Love to Sing’, every Friday, 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM at the Quaker Centre. We see in real life positive impact of these sessions, with our client, Margaret who is 94 remarking, ‘I’d like to come here every day.’
For those who prefer the comfort of home, our companionship visits are tailored to each individual. From sharing a cup of tea and a chat to preparing meals together or exploring hobbies like puzzles or crafts, these moments are designed to make every day brighter. Routine and familiar faces are key, and our Care Professionals build trusted relationships that clients can rely on.
Research highlights the power of addressing loneliness—not just for mental health but for physical well-being too. Up to one in five cases of depression in people over fifty could be prevented by reducing loneliness. That’s why at Home Instead Wimbledon & Kingston, we’re proud to provide companionship care that truly makes a difference.
