One of our favourite activities on a walk is to feed the ducks – there are lots of places in Flintshire where you can see the local wildlife and feed the ducks.
Rain or shine, it’s always good to get out and about and enjoy some fresh air. There are lots of places in the local area where you can go for a gentle stroll. Walking is a free activity and no matter what the season there is always something interesting to see.

Just remember that bread isn’t always the best thing to feed to the ducks. However, they are partial to oats, seeds and even frozen peas or sweetcorn – just remember to defrost them first!
Buckley has strong industrial heritage as a brick-making town and some of the old claypits are now lakes and ponds offering a haven for local wildlife. Some of these ponds are available for angling, however the large pond on the main common is a lovely family-friendly area, with benches and decking areas where you can sit and relax and feed the numerous ducks that call the pond home.
Situated in Connah’s Quay, Wepre Park is a 160 acre woodland full of surprises. You can take a walk to see the ruins of Ewloe Castle as well as a man-made waterfall which is currently in use to provide hydro-electricity! A babbling brook runs right through the park – walk alongside to visit the castle and feed the ducks that you meet along the way.
Situated just on the edge of Hope and Caergwrle, Park in the Past is a unique community heritage project with the aim of creating a full-scale roman fort. There are a number of interactive and educational days held at the park, but it is also open throughout the year for walking, wild-swimming and kayaking. The lake is central to the park and you’ll see plenty of ducks and swans gliding over the shimmering water.
This one is a little different as it’s not really the sort of place to feed the ducks in the traditional sense but if you love wildlife then you’ll be sure to spot plenty on the shoreline next to Flint Castle.
Looking over the Dee Estuary and the marshes and mudflats, the castle area is haven to lots of ducks and wading birds including plovers, godwits, egrets and curlews.
