Whether it’s bacon and eggs or toast and tea, savour the breakfast experience in Yeovil and the surrounding areas.
Tucked away down a lane on the outskirts of Yeovil, The Trough has cemented its reputation for pairing tasty food with stunning views across the rolling Somerset countryside. The owners have farmed the land for seven generations, and use the meat from their Longhorn cross Devon herd on the menu. For a hearty breakfast try the ‘Trough Full English’ or the ‘Longhorn Steak Sarni’. There are less meaty options too, such as the ‘Smashed Avo’ or the ‘Creamy Mushrooms’. Despite the name, the ambience is more modern than rustic; catch the rays on the patio whilst sipping a latte, or spend time browsing in the shop that sells upmarket homeware and gifts.
This is a breakfast/brunch spot for those ‘in the know’. Union Street Brasserie is popular with locals due to good service and flexibility with menu options. It’s location right in the centre of Yeovil also lends itself to being a good ‘meeting-up’ place. Our care pros recommend this venue for its varied food offerings and attentive staff. As well as the standard breakfast fare, there are vegetarian or vegan options. If you are watching the waistline then the ‘Slimming Friendly Full English’ should suit, but for a little more indulgence, we are particularly fond of the ‘French toast with caramelised apples and cinnamon crème fraiche’. Delicious
Set up by a husband-and-wife team who wanted to re-create the experience they had in Africa of savouring farm produce at its best. The vision at TEALS is very much based on connecting with local craftspeople to be sustainable, ethical and to develop a sense of the artisanal journey. The website urges visitors to ‘think of TEALS as the canvas on which to celebrate localness’. So apart from a good dollop of ‘Somerset goodness’ on your plates what else can you expect from a breakfast stop at TEALS? Our team recommend the tasty coffee that is supplied by the Cornish roasters Origin; you can pair your flat white or americano with the traditional ‘TEALS Full English’ or the healthier ‘Almond milk overnight oats with fruit compote’. Alternatively, why not go slightly more off-piste with the ‘Haloumi, kimchi and coriander yoghurt bun’. TEALS gets our vote for its commitment to strong environmental and societal values, being dog-friendly and using top quality ingredients in the food on the restaurant and deli menus – which change on a regular basis to reflect the seasonal variations. It is easy to find just off the Sparkford bypass A303.
‘Start as you mean to go on’ is the breakfast motto at Pip’s; the twist being that the start involves the Beaminster produced Black Cow vodka, in a ‘Pip’s Blood Mary’. Sounds like our kind of place. If you like quirky and original, then Pip’s will suit perfectly. The café is housed within refurbished 1850’s train carriage booths, plus a double decker bus. For the less nimble, there are also seating options in the marquee and garden. With a bakeshop and organic farm on-site, the food exudes freshness and flavour. We love the pancakes which come with a choice of various toppings including toasted coconut. Grilled haloumi is the main event of the veggie breakfast, but the homemade beans and hashbrowns also deserve rightful attention. The other big breakfasts are ‘The Vegan’ or quite simply ‘The Somerset’. For less of a full breakfast hit, you could try the ‘Cornbread sarnie’ with a filling of choice. Pip’s is one of our top picks because of its charm and lovingly crafted fare. One not to be missed, located here between South Petherton and Ilminster.
This bijoux café situated away from the main streets in Yeovil, has a loyal clientele who return time and again for the relaxed homely atmosphere and great value for money. All the food is home cooked; there are no menus to be found online so footfall largely stems from word of mouth. Referred to as a ‘little gem or treasure’, Café 50 caters for all dietary requirements; the vegetarian and vegan breakfast options receive particularly glowing reviews. Our insiders on the ground tell us that nothing is too much trouble for the staff at this unassuming venue, we love that ethos, and suggest that you pop in to try it out for yourself. And please let us know what you think.
It’s true to say that there is no shortage of breakfast options in our region. We hope that by steering you towards our favourites, we have helped to make some sense of what’s on offer. But new independent eateries are always emerging, and we would love to hear about any hidden delights that you think deserve the spotlight.
