Swindon Dementia Action Week 2024 Events

The Swindon Dementia Action Alliance, of which we at Home Instead are proud members, is hosting two events for Dementia Action Week 2024

Dementia is one of the main conditions that many of our older clients live with. We are passionate about supporting people with dementia to continue to live life to the full and have the best possible experiences both in their own home, and in the community.  As founding members of the Swindon Dementia Action Alliance (SDAA) which is 10 years old this year, we are delighted to be running as an SDAA, two events during Dementia Action Week 13th -19th May 2024.

Swindon Dementia Action Alliance 10th Birthday Party!

Back in 2014, a group of local Swindon businesses, including Home Instead Swindon & Vale of White Horse, along with charities, Swindon Borough Council and other organisations got together to form the Swindon Dementia Action Alliance. At the time this was under the umbrella of an Alzheimer’s Society national programme to create “Dementia Friendly Communities”.  The objective was, and still is, to work together to make our town of Swindon a better, more inclusive and accessible place for those who live with dementia and help their friends and families.

Over the last 10 years we, as the SDAA, have moved towards this goal with many initiatives including educational and social events for those living with dementia and their families, and also training sessions for other groups and the public to raise awareness about dementia.  This year the SDAA launched its own website http://www.swindondaa.org.uk

The website contains links to many resources including the Swindon WOW Guide which is produced by Home Instead and helps people find activities suitable for older people, including the local dementia groups and memory cafes. The WOW Guide can be found directly at: www.homeinstead.co.uk/swindon/swindon-wow-guide/

Our own Community Engagement Officer, Cat Attewell, is the Deputy Chair of the SDAA and has been busy co-ordinating the sub-team to arrange events for Dementia Action Week 2024.

On Monday 13th May the SDAA is hosting a big celebration at Grange Leisure in Swindon, it’s 10th Birthday Party where over 100 guests living with dementia and their families will enjoy an afternoon tea (supplied by Olive Tree Café charity in Swindon) and music by popular local musician Tony M (sponsored by fellow SDAA member Swindon Carers) as well as a birthday cake created by the talented chef at a further SDAA member, Ridgeway Rise Care Home.  Tickets have sold out and we hope our guests will have a fantastic time on Monday!

Dementia EXPO at Zurich Swindon

The SDAA is also hosting an educational event which is hosted by another SDAA member, Zurich Financial Services, in their superb foyer area in the new building at Unity Place Swindon. This is on Thursday 16th May at 3-4.30pm and 5 to 6.30pm.  There will be 15 stands from local relevant organisations who support those with dementia and their families including, the Alzheimer’s Society’s, Avon & Bath Mental Health Partnership, NHS Falls Prevention Team, Swindon Carers, Wiltshire Police, Swindon Library’s Service, Thames Water, Wyvern Theatre, Asset Guardians Solicitors.

It is a drop in event, no need to pre-book and there will be 2 Dementia Awareness sessions available starting at 3.30 and 5.30pm open to all, to learn more about dementia and how we can all interact better with those living with dementia when we have greater knowledge of the nature of dementia.

For information about the EXPO event please email the SDAA on [email protected].
